Real-time AI governance is no longer a product roadmap aspiration. It’s becoming a market requirement. In a single week, OneTrust launched continuous monitoring and guardrail enforcement for AI agents across enterprise environments. Smartria shipped AI-powered compliance review tools for registered investment advisors. And a growing chorus of regulators — from the EU AI Act’s replayability requirements to the FCA’s outcomes-based accountability framework — made clear that point-in-time compliance checks are no longer sufficient for systems that make decisions at machine speed.
The governance model itself is changing. Organizations that don’t change with it will find themselves exposed — not because they lack policies, but because their policies can’t keep pace with what their AI systems are actually doing.
Static Governance Was Built for Predictable Software
Traditional governance models assumed predictable systems. Software followed defined rules. If something went wrong, the problem was usually traceable to a specific line of code or a known configuration. Review happened before deployment, and periodic audits confirmed things hadn’t drifted too far.
AI doesn’t work that way. Models learn from data. They adapt. They produce outcomes based on patterns that aren’t always obvious, even to their creators. A subtle bias in training data can quietly influence thousands of decisions before anyone notices. As a result, a governance model that checks an AI system once before deployment — and then revisits it quarterly or annually — leaves a massive window where harm can accumulate undetected.
According to OneTrust’s 2026 Predictions Report, 90% of advanced AI adopters say the technology exposed the limits of siloed and manual governance. Meanwhile, 70% of technology leaders admit their governance efforts can’t keep pace with AI initiatives. The knowing-doing gap is widening, not narrowing.
OneTrust Makes Its Real-Time AI Governance Play
OneTrust’s new capabilities represent the most significant product move in this direction from an established governance vendor. The platform now offers continuous AI agent detection and inventory, automatically capturing ownership, purpose, integrations, data access, lineage, and lifecycle changes across an organization’s entire AI environment.
Additionally, a new AI policy manager lets organizations define or adopt standards-aligned policies and then monitor compliance across models and agents in real time. A guardrail enforcement layer continuously inspects AI systems — including generative AI, traditional machine learning models, and autonomous agents — to validate configurations and detect violations as they happen.
“As AI becomes more embedded across the enterprise, organizations need governance that keeps pace,” said DV Lamba, OneTrust’s chief product and technology officer. Previously, Lamba has described the shift as moving “governance from a checkpoint to a circuit breaker built into the pipeline.”
The timing isn’t accidental. OneTrust’s new CEO, John Heyman, told BankInfoSecurity in March 2026 that enterprises are moving from tens of AI agents in production to hundreds or thousands by year’s end. “Some of the same muscles you build for privacy, consent, and risk are very similar to what you need with AI governance,” he said. For OneTrust — a company valued at $4.5 billion with over $1.1 billion in total funding — this is a strategic reorientation, not a feature update.
The Regulatory Driver: You Can’t Just Explain Intent Anymore
The product shift toward real-time AI governance isn’t happening in a vacuum. Regulators are demanding it.
The EU AI Act’s high-risk requirements take effect in August 2026. For high-risk systems, that means companies must back their AI decisions with evidence — not after the fact, but continuously. Article 73 requires detailed incident reporting. Article 99 sets penalty ceilings up to €35 million or 7% of global turnover. As one analysis framed it, the Act introduces a “replayability test”: if you can’t reconstruct how a specific AI decision was reached — down to the model version, the data used, the checks applied, and when a human could intervene — you can’t ship.
In the UK, the FCA isn’t writing AI-specific rules but holds firms accountable for outcomes through existing frameworks like Consumer Duty and the Senior Managers & Certification Regime. That outcomes-based approach means vendors must build products that give clients provable, continuous governance — not just documentation from the day the system launched.
Singapore’s MAS proposed AI Risk Management Guidelines in November 2025 requiring mandatory AI inventories, risk materiality assessments, and lifecycle controls. The guidelines explicitly cover AI agents and generative AI, and they elevate AI governance into its own lane, separate from traditional model risk management.
Across all three jurisdictions, the direction is the same: governance must be ongoing, not occasional. Continuous, not periodic. Provable, not aspirational.
Smaller Firms Are Getting Real-Time AI Governance Tools Too
The shift isn’t limited to enterprise vendors serving Fortune 500 companies. This week also saw real-time AI governance capabilities filtering down to smaller regulated firms.
Smartria launched two AI-powered features for RIAs and broker-dealers: SmartReview, an AI-powered marketing review assistant that pre-screens content for compliance issues before human submission, and SmartAssist, a chatbot that answers SEC and FINRA questions in plain language. Both tools are powered by what the company calls “hyper-trained” large language models built to respect client data confidentiality. Importantly, current versions are available at no additional cost to existing customers.
“Our focus is on delivering practical tools that improve efficiency while maintaining the security and trust our customers expect,” said Patrick Hunt, Smartria’s CEO.
Meanwhile, TalkCounsel acquired LegalSafe, adding an AI Compliance Readiness Assessment that evaluates small businesses against emerging AI regulations, ethical AI use, and data governance obligations. The tool offers free, instant assessments across 38 risk factors — then connects businesses to attorneys through TalkCounsel’s marketplace for remediation.
These aren’t enterprise governance platforms. However, they signal that real-time AI governance expectations are cascading down the market, from global banks and insurers to independent advisory firms and small businesses. The compliance obligation doesn’t shrink with firm size — and neither does the tooling anymore.
What This Week Signals for Compliance Teams
The products launching right now share a common architecture: governance embedded into operations, not layered on top after deployment. Continuous monitoring, not periodic review. Automated enforcement, not manual checklists.
For compliance teams evaluating AI governance tools, several questions should guide procurement decisions. First, does the platform provide continuous discovery and inventory of AI systems — including shadow AI and third-party agents you didn’t deploy yourself? Second, can it enforce policies in real time, not just flag violations after the fact? Third, does it generate audit-ready documentation automatically, or does your team still need to assemble evidence manually?
These aren’t aspirational requirements. They’re what the EU AI Act, FCA, and MAS are converging toward. As we’ve reported throughout this week, the compliance AI vendors winning enterprise contracts are the ones building governance into product architecture from day one.
Real-time AI governance is replacing the compliance model most organizations grew up with. The old model assumed systems were stable, reviews were periodic, and documentation was sufficient. The new model assumes systems are adaptive, decisions happen at machine speed, and governance must be continuous to be credible.
The vendors building for that reality shipped this week. The question for compliance teams is whether their governance programs are ready to meet them.
